I think I know your cousin…

Pop quiz: What battery company uses a tireless bunny as its mascot?

I’ll wait while you think.

You’ve had enough time. Did you say Energizer? You’re only half right.

In the rest of the world, including New Zealand, it’s Duracell. According to Wikipedia, the Duracell Bunny predates the more musically inclined Energizer one and the Energizer Bunny was originally supposed to mock the Duracell Bunny. Then, as fate would have it, capitalism intervened.

From Wikipedia:

The Duracell Bunny does not appear in North America, due to Energizer jumping the trademark claim for the marketing use of a “battery bunny” in the United States and Canada.

The Duracell Bunny was originally trademarked for use in the US and other countries. Duracell failed to renew its US trademark of the bunny and as a result lost it. Energizer, seeing an opportunity, trademarked a new bunny for its use.

Here’s a Duracell Bunny commercial from the U.K.:

One from Germany:

And one from Mexico. As far as I can tell, this is why they’re building that border wall between the U.S. and Mexico — our “friends” to the south picked the wrong bunny.

  1. Here in Brazil it’s Duracell as well. I might be wrong, but I don’t think there’s a Energizer bunny.
